The idea that i don't need to find an AC plug to power it makes it also a very good choice when you simply need to transfer a few GB quickly. I've heard others talk about the cover separating or coming unglued. I'm watching for that, but haven't seen evidence yet of that happening.
The four-star rating instead of 5 stars is because of two issues the initial software which had to be removed. And, the odd cable situation with two USB plugs. This cable also would be hard to replace it if it was lost or broken, since it is probably a part that isn't readily available from anyone other than Iomega. Other than these rather minor issues, I take this drive everywhere and have had no problems with it. When will external hard drive manufacturers design a drive that doesn't become detached from your computer if you accidentally touch the USB connection cable?
These -- just like all the rest -- become disconnected easily, and you get those messages telling you that you have improperly disconnected the unit. Whenever you do that, you risk destroying all the data on the drive. Alas, there's a dilemma: Do you download once to the drive each month, disconnect it, and then, thereafter, only back-up online? What about privacy issues there? Or do you buy three of these, back up on two, and keep one plugged in for ongoing backups until you accidentally pull the plug one too many times.
This works, of course, to store the data. But that isn't the issue. The real issue here, in buying one of these gizmos is how to avoid accidentally disconnecting it while using it. This does NOT address that issue. I keep hoping for one that will be different. That someone will invent an isp cord that doesn't come out of the computer so easily. Why is that so difficult to accomplish? You mean they WANT me to have to keep buying new external hard drives? I get it. I guess. So, I bought two of these things one blue, one red, so as not to mix them up. And I'm backing up to both. If one fails, I'll still have the other.
What else is there to do? Midnight Blue Verified Purchase. I ordered the Iomega drive because it looked more durable than the Western Digital drive I ordered previously. Still, it is not like a threw it on the ground or dropped it repeatedly. The only thing I did was to put it into my bag's internal zippered compartment for transport. Then it would sit on my desk next to my computer, and occasionally, I would delicately transport it by placing it on-top of my closed lap-top, still leaving it plugged-in to the USB port.
It was working fine for three months. Then, right towards the end of my vacation with my family, I could no longer access the files on the drive. It kept giving me an error -stating the drive was corrupted and I would haev to reformat the drive. If I reformat the drive, then I lose all the files. The entire point of having the drive was to store these files - take them off my laptop creating more space and a faster working environment. Now, I am out of luck. I am without a drive and without files by simply using the drive normally. I went online to the Iomega site to try to get some help.
They charge to recover files off of their drives. This makes me wonder if they set-up the drive to corrupt itself and files on purpose, so they can make money by charging customers to recover files off of their drive. There is no guarantee for one's files on the drive - just the drive itself, so before I can send the drive in for a replacement, I need to try to recover the files on my own, or I need to pay their ridiculous file recovery prices.
Based on experiencing the loss of files from two bad drives, I am seeking-out alternate data storage methods. One is using a sky drive to store files at a secure site on the internet. The only problem with this is that when there is no internet connection, one cannot access these files. Hopefully, one plans in advance - knowing they will need a specific file right when the internet goes out - and places this file on the computer or a thumb-drive immediately.
Good luck when purchasing this drive! Hopefully, the manufacturers don't "see you coming" as they so frequently see me! See all reviews.

I haven't tested if this drive sleeps or not, but it works great for our purposes. I thought I would add a few things I was unsure of when I purchased this item. If you have a newer MacBook Pro like I do, all you will have to use is one firewire cable. This thing is rocket fast. It took me under 2.
Plugged it in and Time Machine started right up. No need to format or do anything other than make a few time machine preference choices. This drive is whisper quiet, the only way you really know its on is by the light. This purchase tool me a few months to make, I looked at other alternatives but kept coming back to iomega.
Once I found this new version I decided to make the purchase and dump my online service. So far it works perfectly and if you own a mac and want a simple and fast backup solution, I can highly recommend this to you. Right now I'm using the Iomega Ego to back up edited videos from I-movie. So far so good. It has been working fine. I also have a WD 1TB hard drive. I like it too. I decide it to purchase the Iomega after reading other user reviews and so far I'm pleased with the product. The only thing I noticed is that sometimes I-movie quit unnexpectly while playing the files.
Maybe because they are large HD files?
I don't know. I'm not an expert on this. But the drive it is not even half way of its capacity so I really don't know why is doing this. Other than that everything is fine. Very quiet unit.
Actually I don't hear any noise out of the drive. One person found this helpful. I bought this drive as a backup to my backup after experiencing failures on different backup drives. After losing some pretty valuable data, my paranoia was at an all-time high. It's nice and compact so i can easily hide it away in a drawer after backing up my data. I've read about overheating issues, but I generally don't attach peripherals longer than necessary. I'm too afraid of them accidentally disconnecting at a bad time, which is one way to hose an external device. After having this hard drive for 6 months, I've had no problems and I'm pretty satisfied with it.
I bought this external hard drive to back up all my computer files pictures, music, documents, etc. When my sister lost all her data after her computer crashed I knew I needed to be doing something to provide a back up if or when I could possibly lose my data. I have a macbook, and all I do is connect it to my laptop, and the time machine program automatically backs up all my data for me.
I haven't had any problems or issues. I have had this for a year and a half now. I would recommend everyone back up their data, and this product has made it extremely easy for me. I bought this external hard drive after reading the reviews and specifications of many other external hard drives and I have to say that I am very pleased with it. I bought it for my Macbook Pro 13" and it has proven very useful and reliable and I have used it everyday for about 6 months.
I'm sure this has only happened to a very small percentage of the hard drives. The weird thing with the temperature is that the longer I have used it, the more cooler it has become. Weird huh Overall this is a great drive and I am very glad I got it and I highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a very fast, reliable, and compact external hard drive.
